Charming, tender bills to a collector and admirer (and onetime lover), Dr. Arnault Tzanck (1886-1954), a pioneer in blood transfusion. Most are adorned with pen-and-ink arabesques or foliage surrounding the signature "Marie"; one is illustrated with a drawing of a bird. Les Moutiers en Retz August 10 [1948]: Arnault to come to La Bernerie after August 15: "I'll be happy to go with you"... August 30 [1950]: "Here it's a little high, not too high - just right [...] personally, car rides don't amuse me much"... Thursday 29, stay at the convent: "camping and cell room. [...] My Sister Superior was walking around yesterday with my handbag, which I had entrusted to her, as my room didn't lock. It was quite touching"; she signs "your wife Marie".
