First edition of this work containing plans of 112 French strongholds, designed by Pierre Le Mau de La Jaisse (1677-1745), military writer, cartographer and engraver.
Each plate, engraved on copper and presented in a medallion, features the town's coat of arms, also engraved on copper. The whole is set off by a wood-engraved frame, crowned with the royal coat of arms. Opposite, a detailed description gives the longitude and latitude, a brief history and the names of the principal officers.
This publication, designed in a portable and accessible format, is a mass-market version of the "Carte générale de la monarchie françoise", published by the author in 1733.
Missing spine and lower headpiece. Some wetness on the endpapers, small wormholes in the inner margins of the leaves.
