Paris: P. Mouillot; Lyon: A. Rey et Cie, 1900. -Large folio, red chagrin, boards almost entirely covered with red cloth decorated with the repeated symbol of the Lyon Chamber of Commerce, double cold fillet framing, ornate ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed (period binding).
First edition of this monumental work, compiled by Raymond Cox (1856-1920) from the rich collections of the Musée historique de la Chambre de commerce de Lyon. The author, who later became director of this institution, was also responsible for teaching fabric decoration.
The study is divided into four main periods: "Byzantium to the 7th century, the Orient to the 12th, Italy to the 16th, France from the 17th.
The book is illustrated with numerous diagrams in the text and 129 plates, many in color.
A fine copy in period binding, probably the publisher's, fully mounted on tabs.
Some wear and tear. Scattered foxing.
