[MAP]
BOUCHETTE, Joseph.
Map of the Provinces of Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island with a Large Section of the United States and Exhibiting the Boundary of the British Dominions in North America (portion), According to the Treaties of Sherman & Smith, New-York, 1853. 1200 x 2225 mm. Map in 6 folded sheets, themselves cut into 6 segments. Leaves yellowed and dusty.

New-York edition of 1853, the first edition appeared in 1846. Winearls mentions two later editions of the map, in 1852 and 1853. The map was engraved and printed in New York by Sherman and Smith and not in London by J. & C. Walker and James Wyld, as was the case for the 1831 edition.

This map is a thorough revision and redrawing, at the same scale, of Bouchette's 1831 map of Upper and Lower Canada. The map is extended eastward to include all of Nova Scotia and, further north, Anticosti Island. New maps of the Montreal area, Lake Superior and the Niagara district have been added, while the remaining maps of Newfoundland and British North America have been completely revised. Changes to the Canada-U.S. borders in Oregon (1846) and Maine (1842) are shown, as are the first three Canadian railroad lines, still very short (compared to the large number already under construction in the U.S.). In addition, numerous other revisions have been made to the main map, carefully documented by Winearls. Copyrights are registered for Canada and New York.

This is the second major Canadian map produced by Canadians but engraved in America, after David Taylor's Map of the Canadas in 1834.

Provenance: Geological Society of France.
