APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume) - FÉRAT (Serge). The Breasts of Tiresias. A surrealist drama in two acts and a prologue. With music by Germaine Albert-Birot. Paris: SIC Editions, 1918. — In-8, 192 x 143: 108 pp., (2 blank folios at the beginning), printed cover. Dark blue half-maroquin with bands, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (D. H. Mercher). First edition of this play, which premiered on June 24, 1917, at 10–12 Rue de l’Orient in Paris. Apollinaire makes this clarification at the beginning of his preface: “Without asking for leniency, I would like to point out that this is an early work, for except for the Prologue and the last scene of the second act, which date from 1916, this play was written in 1903—that is, fourteen years before it was staged.” The action takes place in Zanzibar. The edition is illustrated with seven full-page drawings by the painter Serge FÉRAT (1881–1958), one of which is repeated on the cover. Copy on standard paper. Only 17 copies were printed on large-format paper. Beautiful binding by Daniel-Henri Mercher. Cover has darkened.
