DU BREUL (Jacques). The Theatre of Antiquities in Paris. Where is traced the foundation of the Churches & Chapels of the City, University, City, & Diocese of Paris: as well as the institution of the Parliament, foundation of the University & Colleges, & other remarkable things. Paris: Claude de La Tour, 1612. - In-4, 228 x 155: (8 ff.), 1310 pp. Rigid parchment, spine with nerves (period binding). Original edition dedicated to François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti. Jacques Du Breul (1528-1614) was a theologian, historian and Claustral Prior of Saint-Germain-des-Près. With this text, he offered one of the most useful works for the knowledge of Paris, which will be re-edited several times and which will serve as a basis for many studies and texts, notably by Piganiol de La Force, de Saint-Foix but also by Victor Hugo for his Notre-Dame de Paris. The author has gathered together what had been written on this subject by Corrozet, Bonfons, Fauchet, Pasquier and André Duchesne. He was also helped by many people such as Jacques Le Jay, Louis Seguier, dean of the chapter of the canons of Notre-Dame, Jacques Auguste de Thou, president of the Parliament, who gave him the "great and small pastoral" he often quotes, Brother Jean, who gave him documents relating to the abbey of Saint-Victor, Favin, who gave him documents relating to the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, etc. He was also helped by many other people . The illustration consists of the royal coat of arms on the title and 11 very beautiful and fine engravings, including 2 full-page and 9 in the text, depicting tombs or portraits of famous people, including that of the President of Thou, executed by Thomas de Leu, Léonard Gaultier and Jean Dubrayet. These engravings will not be included in the second edition of 1639, a good copy in the binding of the time. Two slots at the hinge of the first course. Missing tea
