DENIS (Mauritius) - VERLAINE (Paul). Wisdom. ... - Lot 206 - Ader
DENIS (Mauritius) - VERLAINE (Paul). Wisdom. Paris: Ambroise Vollard, 1911. - In-4, 286 x 227: (4 ff.), 100 pp., (2 ff. first blank), printed cover. Hinged wooden binding opening on the spine, on the first cover there is a large composition inlaid with repeated oblique bands of wood stained in various colours (yellow, orange, brown, grey, beige, blue, etc.), smooth spine, grey velvet endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Alain Taral). Edition of 250 copies, very nicely illustrated with more than 70 black and colour compositions, including many ornaments, by Maurice DENIS (1970-1943), woodcut by Jacques Beltrand. It was in 1889, during the author's lifetime, that Maurice Denis undertook to illustrate these poems. While still very young, he had the opportunity to show his drawings to Verlaine who did not resolve to publish them. Maurice Denis took them back in 1910, coloured them and entrusted them to Jacques Beltrand who engraved them on wood. The book will finally be printed on August 30 of the same year. The title bears the date 1911, one of the 210 copies on Hollande Van Gelder, superbly bound by Alain Taral. Perfectly preserved copy. Without the flaps of the cover, which have however browned the edges of the first and last white sheets.
