BOFA (Gus). The Symphony of Fear. [Paris] : L'Artisan du livre, 1937. - In-4, 278 x 224 : frontispiece, (44 ff. 2 first and last blank), 39 plates, printed cover. Black half-maroquin, cold fillet, smooth spine with gilt title, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Creuzevault). First edition of this work entirely designed by Gus BOFA (1883-1968), illustrated with 40 black plates by the artist, including one in the frontispiece. It was realized in phototype and printed at 1225 numbered copies. In the words of Pierre Mac Orlan, Gus Bofa shows himself in this work "the often impassive observer of all the particular details whose sum constitutes the great collective fear: that which afflicted the bells of the Middle Ages, and the most upsetting horns of automobiles in flight towards an unimaginable goal". (Pierre Mac Orlan, Éloge de Gus Bofa, Manuel Bruker, 1949). Emmanuel Pollaud-Dulian specifies that "this album marks, for him, the end of a cycle that allowed him to put his human condition in focus" (Pollaud-Dulian, Gus Bofa, 1949). (Pollaud-Dulian, Gus Bofa l'enchanteur désenchanté, 2013, p. 407). One of 1000 copies on Lafuma-Navarre (No. 163), perfectly bound by Creuzevault and ENRICHED WITH A LARGE ORIGINAL DRAWING SIGNED BY GUS BOFA, done in ink with white highlights, captioned in pencil: "The amateur starter. - Say, is it sure it's not loaded?». A perfectly preserved copy.
