CARJAT (Étienne). Diogenes. Portraits and satirical biographies of men of the nineteenth century. Paris, 10 August 1856-26 April 1857. - 36 issues in one volume, folio, 430 x 300, dark green half-chagrin, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Very rare complete collection of this satirical weekly newspaper founded by Amédée Rolland and the cartoonist, photographer and writer Étienne Carjat (1828-1906). Printed in Montmartre, it appeared in 36 issues published between August 10, 1856 and April 26, 1857. The first 12 issues as well as issues 18 to 36 include 4 pages, with a biography of a famous person, some columns and on page 3 a caricature by Carjat. Numbers 19 to 35 include 4 additional pages each with columns, letters from readers, theatre reviews, etc. Contributors to the journal included Amédée Rolland, who was the editor, Victor Koning, Jules Lermina, Ernest d'Hervilly, Jean du Boys and Charles Bataille. All the full-page caricatures were by Etienne Carjat, woodcut by Pothey or lithographed. The personalities represented are: Pierre Jean de Béranger, Alexandre Dumas, Honoré de Balzac, Hippolyte de Villemessant, Louis Veuillot, Adolphe Thiers, Paul Grassot, Jean-François Millet, Émile de Girardin, Paul de Kock, Rachel, Horace Vernet, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, General d'Orgoni, Théodore Barrière, Adolphe Crémieux, Nadar, Henry Mürger, Alexandre Dumas fils, Rossini, George Sand, François Ponsard, Théophile Gautier, Pierre Dupont, Auguste Préault, Hector Berlioz, Auguste Villemot, Giuseppe Verdi, Charles Monselet, Charles Gounod, Victor Séjour, Louis Gueymard, Joseph-Isidore Samson, Louis Bouilhet, Félicien David and Ferdinand Dugué. Copy enriched with an original drawing signed by Etienne Carjat, 415 x 270 mm, representing a portrait-charge of the journalist and historian Louis Blanc (1811-1882), as well as the number 46 of the magazine Les Homme d'aujourd'hui dedicated to Etienne Carjat with a caricature of him by André Gill. Horizontal folding in the center of the boards, tear in the center of the spine, restorations. Very good condition inside.
