Jean Baptiste DUCHESNE " de GISORS " (1770-1856). French school. Doctor Corvisart, Emperor Napoleon I's physician in bust, wearing the Legion of HonourA round wooden varnished cap, decorated on the lid with an oval miniature on enamel, signed and dated 1813 on the right (small hair on the enamel), in a rectangular gold frame decorated with foliated scrolls . Gold interior stamped with hare's head and foreign hallmarks. The reverse of the miniature bears a brass plate engraved "J.N CORVISART Mbre de l'institut Baron de l'Empire 1er Médecin de l'Empereur Napoléon Painted for his Friend J.Isabey Ptre Par Duchesne after the painting by F Gérard in 1813. " The inside of the box bears an inventory number : 91. Miniature : 39 x 26 mmDiameter of the box : 80 mm - Gross weight : 98 gB. E. Related work : A similar miniature dated 1809 is mentioned in the Schidlof, another one dated 1819 is also referenced . It would seem that in both cases it is the same miniature, belonging to the collection of Madame ROLLE. The latter inherited from her friend Henriette Isabey-Wey (1837-1881), daughter of the artist, a large collection of works by Isabey; part of it was bequeathed by Madame Rolle to the Louvre in 1910. History : Baron Jean Nicolas Corvisart (1755-1821) : A remarkable clinician, he was appointed physician to Napoleon, who made him Baron in 1808 . He sought to give scientific bases to clinical medicine by basing it on pathological anatomy. In particular, he popularized percussion as a method of examination in the diagnosis of heart and lung diseases.
