Rodolphe Bresdin (1822-1885 )The City at... - Lot 41 - Ader
Rodolphe Bresdin (1822-1885 )The City at the Stone Bridge. 1865. Pen and ink drawing on tracing [172 x 102] pasted on vellum [253 x 182]. Signed and dated in the sky at upper left. Small russet splashes on the reverse of the support and remains of mounting tabs in the corners on the reverse. Preparatory drawing for the eponymous etching dated 1865 (Van Gelder 117), which is extremely rare, known from only 3 proofs in its final state. This drawing is mentioned by Van Gelder: "Bresdin certainly worked from a small drawing [...] now lost and representing the stone bridge. "The artist seems to have transfigured the place where he lived at the time: "The Bordeaux of the time, where a railway bridge had just flanked Deschamp's 17-arched bridge..." (Dirk van Gelder, Rodolphe Bresdin, catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre gravé, vol. (Dirk van Gelder, Rodolphe Bresdin, catalogue raisonné of the engraved work, vol. II, Paris, éditions du Chêne, 1976, p. 90). "His stay in Bordeaux in the mid-1860s was the occasion for a new and important group of completed drawings. He continued his exploration of landscapes, huge armies and battles as well as village scenes, usually in pen and ink drawings on relatively small bristlecones. It was also at this time that Odilon Redon sought a master in him, so much so that his works bear the trace of a profound influence, even to the point of appropriation. "(David B. Becker, "Bresdin dessinateur", in M. Préaud, Rodolphe Bresdin 1822-1885, Robinson graveur, exhibition catalogue, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2000, p. 28).
