Eugene KURTZ (1923-2006). Autograph music manuscript signed, The Shooting of Dan Mc Grew, [1949]; [2]-149 leaves 43.5 x 30.5 cm. Orchestral score for a ballet, Kurtz's first work, in 1949, the same year Kurtz received his M.A. at the Eastman School of Music, premiered at the Festival of American Music in Rochester in 1949. As the title page indicates, the ballet is based on the poem of the same title by Robert Service (1874-1958), and dedicated to the choreographer Thelma Biracree (1904-1997), who was responsible for its creation The orchestra consists of 2 flutes (and piccolo), 2 oboes (and English horn), 2 clarinets (and alto saxophone), 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, piano, and strings. The score includes: Introduction, Slowly (pp. 1-9); "Group Dance. The scene is The Malamute Saloon - somewhere in Alaska" (pp. 10-32); "Dan's Dance," Rather fast and lively (pp. 33-63); "Entrance of the Lady known as Lou," Very slowly (pp. 63-65); "Lou's Dance" (pp. 66-71); "Entrance of Reformers" (pp. 71-83); "Pas de deux: Dan and Lou" (pp. 84-91); "Entrance of the Stranger", Fast (pp. 92-97); "Stranger's Dance", Much faster (pp. 98-121); "Group Dance" (pp. 121-133); "The Stranger goes to the piano again. He plays watching Lou" (pp. 133-139); "The Stranger gangs his arms on the piano" (p. 140); "The shooting (blackout)", Vivace (pp. 141-143); "Light up. Dan Mc Grew ans the Stranger have shot each other. Lou kisses the Stranger, pinches his poke, and disappears back up stairs" (pp. 144-149). The manuscript is carefully notated in black ink on 24-line tracing paper in the Circle Blue Print Co. mark.
