An ancient and beautiful mask with an articulated... - Lot 112 - Ader
An ancient and beautiful mask with an articulated jaw, with projected cylindrical eyes, a median scarification on the forehead is sculpted in relief extending the bridge of the nose; it is adorned with a beautiful tiara finely sculpted with a motif characteristic of Poro masks of protective fetish horns. On the surface, ancient remnants of plant resin clearly indicate that, in addition to fixing his beard of colobus hair, he once also wore a rectangular red cloth wolf that framed his eyes. Such masks were part of a pantheon of very diverse masks within Poro society and served as agents of social control; they all had names, and the exercise of naming them as George Harley undertook to do, seems a very difficult if not futile endeavor in view of the secrecy that prevailed within these societies, especially at the time of this mask. Kran, Liberia Wood, rattan, vegetable resin, old wear and tear on the back, otherwise excellent condition, very nice patina. H. 25 cm Provenance : - Former Marcel Évrard collection
