CHATEAUBRIAND (François René de). Complete... - Lot 54 - Ader
CHATEAUBRIAND (François René de). Complete works. Paris, Pourrat frères, 1836-1839. - 36 volumes in-8, red half calf, smooth spine decorated, spotted edges (period binding). One of the most beautiful editions of the complete works of Chateaubriand. Announced in the "Bibliographie de la France" of November 15, 1838, the edition first appeared in 32 volumes. However, "to the 32 volumes announced, the publishers joined in the same format the 4 volumes that the author has published since (the translation of Paradise Lost and the Essay on English Literature) so that this edition is as complete as the others, which brings them to 36" (Vicaire II, 300). These last 4 volumes are present here . The set is illustrated with woodcut vignettes on the majority of the titles and some in the text, 87 copper-engraved plates, a facsimile of an autograph, the tree of the Ionic and Italic schools, as well as 2 folding maps. An attractive copy in contemporary binding. Spine faded, traces of wetness in volume XV. Freckles, sometimes strong. Two leaves and a plate disbound in the seventh volume. Light spotting in volume XV.
