Hippolyte LE BAS (1782-1867) painter of landscapes,... - Lot 13 - Ader
Hippolyte LE BAS (1782-1867) painter of landscapes, seascapes, watercolors. L.A.S., Naples October 17, 1807, to his mother in Paris; 3 1/2 pages in-4 filled with a small handwriting, address. Long letter of the future architect about his trip and his stay in Naples and Campania. Leaving Rome on September 25, with some of Girodet's students, his first day of travel took him to Velletri "a rather unpleasant town"; they then crossed the Pontine marshes, very unhealthy and dangerous: "we always walked with a gun in our hands and were the first to ask for life to those we heard walking in the dark"; they arrived in Terracina where they spent three days, very well treated. In spite of the presence of brigands, they continued their road with "4 carriages of rollers which served us as escort" and arrived at Gaëte "strong city of the edge of the sea which, was taken nine months ago by the French", from where they reached Capoue, where they visited "the ruins of the old Capoue, which consist of a triumphal arch and an amphitheatre". After a stop at Caserta, a palace "of the most g[ran]riculous magnificence", they arrived in Naples on foot, on October 5. The next day, they went "to hear charming music at the opera buffon"; they visited the city, went to the French theater: "they gave the Metromania and the false infidelities" but very badly played. He asked for permission to visit and draw Pompeii. He saw the coast and the Pausilippe, the palace of Queen Joan, the royal theater of St. Charles, the convent of the Camaldulas, went up to Vesuvius, made the trip to Paestum and Salerno. He still has to go to Baya, and cannot give in writing an idea of the beauty of the places... Etc.
