Henri, abbé GRÉGOIRE (1750-1831) priest, deputy of the clergy of the bailliage of Nancy to the Estates General, constitutional bishop of Blois, deputy of Loir-et-Cher to the Convention, he fought for the emancipation of the Jews and the abolition of slavery. Partially autograph manuscript of a work on the republic of letters, [ca. 1820]; 50 pages small in-4. Unpublished manuscript for an association among the members of the republic of letters. In the hand of Grégoire's secretary, this manuscript has numerous autograph additions and corrections. Grégoire calls for a "general association between the members of the republic of letters", who would gather regularly in "literary congresses", to develop education and fight ignorance. We have here chapters 3: "Is a congress of the republic of letters at fixed times possible?"; 4: "Composition of the congress. Consideration on the people of letters"; 5: "In which place could the congress be held? At which time, who would convene it?"; 6: "Work of the congress"; 7: "Conclusion", which ends with these words: "Virtue and truth are an inheritance that we must transmit to the posterity; because they are also of the family those generations which are still in the nothingness and which will come to the existence only when we will sleep in the tomb". Attached is the minute of a letter of Grégoire, Paris October 8, 1820, to the duke of Richelieu (2 p. in-4 by his secretary), protesting against the libel of Dubouchage treating him of regicide, against the censorship which prevents him from answering it, against the surveillance of his correspondence....; a copy by his secretary of a polemic with Raoul-Rochette about the canonization of Charlemagne, 1816 (11 p. in-4); and a copy of the Memoire sur une ancienne clochette spherique dont un hemisphere est à jour (6 p. in-4, et un f. joint).
