Reunion of the three works on the learning of the French language by Abbé Boulliette (1720- ?). The first edition of 1760 was addressed to the Académie française, whose encouragement prompted Boulliette to perfect his work in 1788, accompanied by a dedication to the Académie. The Syllabary was in use in the school of the Brothers of the Christian Doctrine in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. The first volume, divided into two parts, deals, in the first, with vowels and consonants, and in the second, with the characters or letters which serve to represent the sounds. The second, in three chapters, deals with the disadvantages of having students begin by learning the alphabet, then with the disadvantages of using the names of the letters, and with an exposition of the order and manner that a teacher should employ. The last work is a progressive syllabary with an alphabet "according to which the letters are ordinarily arranged". Rubbing to the binding and missing at the foot of the spine. Provenance: Library of Philibert Bruys des Gardes, with his engraved bookplate.
