First rare edition of this graphic primer and first work by American author and illustrator Donald Crews, born in 1938. He graduated from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, where he worked as a graphic designer. Military service in Germany, where his first daughter Nina is born, and where he prepares the drawings for his graphic design portfolio. Return to New York, birth of Amy, where he is advised to turn his drawings into a children's book: the beginning of a dazzling career. Caldecott Honor Book twice. These are not illustrations, but concepts represented by geometric shapes in bright primary colors. On the left, a text in large colored typography and what it appears on the right page. Examples: "Bb, Bottom: where the green is" and, opposite, an apple green stripe at the foot of the page, "Ee, equal: as many black as yellow" and yellow and black checkerboard opposite. In perfect condition, including its rare dust jacket.
