ELSKAMP (Max). The Alphabet of Our Lady the... - Lot 164 - Ader
ELSKAMP (Max). The Alphabet of Our Lady the Virgin. By Max Elskamp. Published by the Conservatory of Popular Tradition. Antwerp. 1901. Printed by J. E. Buschmann. In-4 (26,8 x 21,2 cm). (58) ff., printed on one side: filled Holland paper covers, the first one illustrated with woodcuts bearing the title, in the center, in a first frame decorated with black hearts and arabesques, a second frame of blue ribbons mixed with double golden yellow hearts. Rare first edition with woodcuts, colored, realized on one side of the Hollande paper leaves. Entirely decorated alphabet book, drawn and engraved by the Belgian symbolist poet Max Elskamp (1862-1931). Framed with blue ribbons and double yellow hearts on each page. A woodcut in the center of the page, surmounted and underlined by yellow and blue flowers, figures in a Flemish imagery style the initial opposite. The initial placed in the center of the legend, however, begins it. The legend is also imagined and engraved by the poet. Limited edition of 215 copies: 5 on Japon, 10 on Chine, 100 on Hollande and 100 on vellum. One of the rare copies on Hollande n° 58. Attached is a letter from the publisher G. Van Oest of Brussels, dated June 6, 1921, addressed to an ambassador and relating to the book of which Elskamp has just found two copies. Work very well preserved.
