HUMBERT (A.). A journey in a magic lantern. New... - Lot 199 - Ader
HUMBERT (A.). A journey in a magic lantern. New grotesque reading charts preceded by an alphabet, the first notions of reading and grammar. Text by A. Humbert illustrated with nine comic colored drawings. Illustrated publications for children and youth. Haguenthal, Printer-publisher in Pont-à-Mousson, (Meurthe). [Around 1865]. In-8 (24 x 17,8 cm). (13) ff. printed in recto: publisher's glossy paper boards, rich gilt and vermilion framing, turquoise background, lithographed and colored vignette applied on the first plate, landscape in black in the center of the second, red percaline spine. Amusing and rare work in period colors. A page of three alphabets, a page of reading notions and a page of four lessons, precede nine plates with a stenciled lithograph at mid-page. They are grotesque caricatures of couples from different countries or regions of France: Great Britain, Spain, Russia, Alsace, Italy, Turkey, Brittany, Greece and Poland. A joyful poetry by Auguste Humbert (1813-19?), about the country and addressed to children, underlines them. Well complete in thirteen leaves. Spine and endpapers renewed, but a nice copy.
