Paris: Librairie José Corti, [1954]. - In-8, 187 x 118: 122 pp., (3 ff. last blank), printed cover. Original edition of the French translation made by Julien Gracq at the request of Jean-Louis Barrault of the drama by the German writer and playwright Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811). This play was considered unplayable and unrepresentable on stage, so Julien Gracq gave this warning: "The present translation of Penthésilée is a version made for the stage. The aim was to reconcile as far as possible, on the one hand, fidelity to the German text and, on the other hand, the requirements of French diction and representation. The modifications made consist of the addition of half a dozen very short replicas that it seemed necessary to intersperse, and the deletion of some descriptive passages, mainly concerning the pursuit of Achilles by Penthesilea (scene II) and the history of the Amazon kingdom (scene XV). " ONE OF THE 36 EXAMPLES ON PURE LAFUMA WIRE, only print on large paper ( no. 8). Very well preserved copy.
