[GOLD (Gustav) and miscellaneous]. Those Chinese from Paris. Paris: In the office of Jounat (sic) [Aubert], circa 1854. - Oblong folio album, 297 x 420 : (56 ff.), printed cover. Green half-basane with wedges, spine with ornamented ribs, preserved cover (early 20th century binding). Album gathering on 56 sheets more than a hundred woodcuts from the Journal pour rire. This is the reunion of sheets of comic wallpaper published by Aubert. The first album of this kind appeared in 1850, consisting of 28 sheets of green paper, announced more precisely on October 12, 1850 in the Bibliographie de la France. Aubert published a series of six; they were advertised in the Journal des Débats Politiques et Littéraires of September 1, 1851, where it is stated: "These wallpapers contain an infinite number of non-political drawings, by the draftsmen of the Journal pour rire; the drawings are all varied not only throughout the whole roll, which never exists in ordinary wallpapers, but also in six different rolls, so that a piece of six rolls can be wallpapered without a single drawing being repeated. - These six rolls come in five different backgrounds: blue - green - pink - yellow and white. The price of each roll is 1 franc 75 cents. To be able to establish them at this price, they had to be printed in double width; the roll sells for 3 francs 50 cents. " Above this advertisement is this interesting insert: "Aubert's comic wallpapers have been so successful that the first two rolls, with a print run of 2,000 copies, are already sold out. A new print, to which a third roll has been added, has just been made, so that a piece of six ordinary rolls can be wallpapered with Aubert's comic wallpapers without having a single repeated subject.
