Our drawing is a first thought for the spandrel of the Bourbon Palace décor, with some variations and in the opposite direction of the final realization (see: L. Johnson, The paintings of Eugene Delacroix, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1989, volumes V and VI, pl.33, fig.551, reproduced). The Louvre Museum holds a preparatory study for the pastel (RF.32259) and a watercolour (RF.31327).
