Italy, Bologne ?, ca. 1300 Dummy montage, with lower band under the historiated initial from another manuscript; some faces possibly retouched (?) . Bolognese workshop close to the painters of the choir books of San Domenico (Gubbio) Dimensions: 100 x 140 mmThis initial is to be compared with the illuminations painted in Bologna at the very end of the 13th century, beginning of the 14th century, several of which were sold by the Italian bookseller Rappaport in the 1920s, painted for the Dominican monastery of Gubbio, by a workshop in Bologna, no doubt within a Dominican scriptorium in Bologna (see Palladino, Pia . Treasures of a Lost Art. Italian Manuscript Painting of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, 2003, no. 4).
