BMC, II, 437. - Hain, 14508. - Brunet, I, 1860. original Latin edition of the famous Nuremberg Chronicle of the physician and chronicler Hartman Schedel (1440-1514 ). It is a universal chronicle presenting the general evolution of the world from its origins to the middle of the 15th century. It is called "Nuremberg" in connection with the birthplace of the author, the Mecca of humanism at the time. It is undoubtedly one of the most important books of the time and one of the most famous incunabula. Jean-Claude Colbus and Brigitte Hébert specify in their article Le monde, image par image : the Nuremberg Chronicle, that "this historical work, superb as well as ambitious, which presents a global vision of man and the universe, provides us with an irreplaceable snapshot of the world at the end of the 15th century; for nearly a century it was considered by many historians as a reliable source to which they would not fail to turn extensively" (Jean-Claude Colbus and Brigitte Hébert, Le monde, image par image : the Nuremberg Chronicle, in: Pouvoirs de l'image aux XVe, XVIe et XVIIe siècles, p. 36). Schedel, in the manner of medieval chroniclers, compiled well-known texts. But the originality and modernity of the work comes from the abundant illustration, which includes in the complete copies 1809 engravings made from 645 different woods, carved in the workshop of the painter and engraver Michael Wohlgemuth (1434?-1519), who had been Dürer's teacher from 1486 to 1490.
