BUY DE MORNAS (Claude). Atlas Méthodique et Elémentaire de Géographie et d'histoire. Paris: the author, Desnos, 1761-1762. - 4 volumes in-folio, 400 x 287: 57 plates; 62 plates (out of 71); frontispice, 61 plates; frontispice, 77 plates. Marbled calf, gilt roulette in frame and decoration with small irons in the centre on the plates, spine with decorated ribs, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Original edition dedicated to President Hénault of this important atlas published by the geographer and professor of geography and history Claude Buy de Mornas. This ambitious publication, which the author was unable to complete, was produced for educational purposes, for the education of young people, bringing together history, geography and chronology. Divided into two parts, the first, forming the first volume, is devoted to astronomy and geography, that is to say, to what has to do with the sky and the Earth, the different kinds of spheres, globes and maps, measurements, time, eras and periods, etc. The second part is devoted to the history of astronomy and geography. The second, consisting of volumes 2 to 4, deals with the ancient history of empires, kingdoms and republics. The volume on modern history has not been published. The first volume is dated 1761 and bears the engraved title Atlas Méthodique et Elémentaire de Géographie et d'histoire (Methodical and Elementary Atlas of Geography and History); the other three volumes contain another engraved title entitled Atlas historique et géographique, dated 1762.
