CHOISY (François-Timoleon de). Interpretation... - Lot 62 - Ader
CHOISY (François-Timoleon de). Interpretation of the Psalms. With the life of David. Paris: Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1687. - In-4, 247 x 180: frontispice, (8 ff. first blank), 88, 645 pp. badly ciphered 665, (5 ff. last blank), 1 map. Red morocco, triple gilt fillet in the frame and gilt arms in the centre of the plates, spine ribbed with gilt fleurs-de-lis, gilt inside roulette, gilt edges (period binding). Original edition dedicated to Louis XIV. This work was composed by the abbot of Choisy less than two years after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (October 18, 1685). In his epistle to the king, the author refers to this event and even encourages the monarch to continue the conversion to Catholicism not only of French Huguenots, but also foreigners such as those from Asia: "To make yourself, Sire, as great before God as you are before men, all that remains for you to do is to complete what you have so fortunately begun. These are the ardent desires of the new Christians of the East, who pray unceasingly for You, & look to You, after God, as the author of their salvation" (Epistle). The abbot of Choisy accompanied the knight Alexandre de Chaumont on a mission to Siam from March 1685 to June 1686, as coadjutor, which explains this reference to the East in the epistle. The interpretation of the psalms is preceded by the Life of David, which was considered by some contemporaries as a panegyric of Louis XIV. The edition is illustrated with a beautiful frontispiece on strong paper, engraved by Jean Louis Roullet (1645-1699) after a drawing by Joseph Parrocel (1646-1704), the mark of Mabre-Cramoisy on the title, a banner with the royal coat of arms engraved by Jollain, a lettering and two unsigned culs-de-lampe. There is also a folding card for the Life of David, engraved by Bonnart. COPY WITH THE ARMS OF PHILIPPE DE FRANCE, DUKE OF ORLÉANS (1640-1701) BROTHER OF LOUIS XIV. There are also the engrav
