Cream paperboard, smooth spine, speckled edges (19th century binding). Hain, *8249. - Goff, G-668. very fine Basel edition printed before 1510 on the presses of Michael Furter (14..-1517 ). It is a glossy edition of the commentaries of the Dominican preacher Johannes Herolt (1390?-1468) on the Gospels and the Letters of the Apostles, long attributed to William of Paris or William of Auvergne. The oldest known edition was established around 1472 and nearly a hundred appeared during the 15th century. Michael Furter printed about ten editions of this text, the oldest of which is from 1491. This one, dating from the first years of the 16th century, is printed in Gothic characters on two columns of 49 lines. It is divided into two distinct parts, each with an illustrated title, the first with a letter, three bands and a composition representing the symbol of the four evangelists Mark, Matthew, John and Luke, surrounding the Child Jesus, the second showing the scene of the crucifixion. The first part is illustrated with 55 woodcuts, including the crucifixion scene, which is repeated on the back of the title. Some of these woodcuts can be found in the various editions printed by Furter as early as 1491, sometimes with some variations.
