RABELAIS (François). The Works of M. François... - Lot 72 - Ader
RABELAIS (François). The Works of M. François Rabelais... Augmented with the life of the Author & some Remarks on his life & history. With the explanation of all the difficult words. S.l. Amsterdam: Louis and Daniel Elzevier], 1663. - 2 volumes in-12, 123 x 70: (12 ff.), 490 pp. badly ciphered 488, (5 ff.); (1 f.), pp. 489-946, (4 ff.). Red morocco, fillets and laces with small golden irons on the covers, smooth decorated spine, inside gilded roulette, lining and endpapers dominated by purple floral motifs on a gold background, gilt edges (18th century binding). Tchémerzine, V, p. 317. - Willems, 1316: Beautiful edition of Rabelais' works, printed in Amsterdam by Louis and Daniel Elzevier . It contains a life of the author attributed, as well as notes, to Pierre du Puy. A copy of the edition on strong paper, "which has yellowed with time", as Tchémerzine tells us, in a charming 18th century leather binding with lace. Designed in the 1780s, it can be attributed to the Royal Manufacture of Striped Papers established in rue et faubourg Saint-Denis. Some of the irons are actually found on the binding covering the Essai physico-géométrique de Guillaume Le Robergherr de Vausenville published in 1778, made by this manufactory for Queen Marie-Antoinette, reproduced on the site "reliures.bnf.fr". The bindings are very well preserved despite a few small rubbings. In the first volume, the first three leaves as well as leaves *6, *7, X6, X9 and X10 have been brought back, some of them coming from another copy. These last 3 leaves seem to come from a copy on fine paper, they have shorter margins and the last one has been restored. Some scattered freckles without gravity.
