[TURGOT - Louis BRETEZ]. Map of Paris, Begun in the Year 1734. Drawn and Engraved, under the orders of Messire Michel Etienne Turgot... Raised and Drawn by Louis Bretez. Engraved by Claude Lucas. And written by Aubin. [Paris], 1739. - In-folio, 553 x 442: 21 plates. Marbled calf, gilt roulette wheel in frame, gilt fleur-de-lys at the corners and gilt coat of arms in the centre on the plates, ornate spine ribbed, gilt roulette wheel inside, gilt edges (period binding). FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST FAMOUS BETTING PLAN, CALLED PLAN DE TURGOT. It consists of the assembly plan, followed by 20 superb double plates engraved in intaglio, mounted on tabs. Plates 18 and 19 are joined together. It was out of concern to promote the city of Paris that Turgot, in 1734, decided to have a new plan of the Capital made. He entrusted the task to the architect and cartographer Louis Bretez. The latter's work lasted two years, after which the engraver Claude Lucas was commissioned to etch and chisel the 21 drawings; he finished in 1739 with a copy of the coat of arms of the city of Paris . Hinges split, caps torn off, a few lacks on the back, blunt corners. Well preserved boards, slightly browned however. Ink stains without gravity on the card n° 9. on joint : - DELISLE (Guillaume ). Map of Normandy where are marked exactly the enclosed Countries or Regions of this Province as well as the Towns, villages, parishes and other places. Paris: at the author's home, December 1716. - In-plano, folded sheet. Copy with borders and main cities highlighted in color. Traces of folds, small tears on the edges, slight soiling.
