GIDE (André). Les Cahiers d'André Walter.... - Lot 84 - Ader
GIDE (André). Les Cahiers d'André Walter. Posthumous work. Paris: Perrin et Cie, 1891. - In-16, 188 x 120 : (2 ff.), 279 pp. Demi-toile verte à la bradel, dos lisse, non trigné (Paul Vié). Very rare first edition of André Gide's first book. This edition was printed only a few months before the second one, which will appear at the Librairie de l'Art indépendant. Gide, had received the first copies from Perrin in December 1890. Dissatisfied, finding her to be at fault, he disowned her and had most of the copies printed destroyed, with the exception of the press copies that had already been sent, of which the number is estimated at about 70. The edition begins with a notice signed "P.C.", for Pierre Chrisis, pseudonym of Pierre Louÿs; it will not be included in the second edition. EXAMPLE OF OCTAVE MIRBEAU, WITH THIS SENDING ON THE FALSE TITLE: to Mr. Octave Mirbeau // respectful homage // André Gide The relationship between these two great writers was described by Alain Goulet as follows: "Octave Mirbeau and André Gide are very different personalities who had no a priori affinity . One enters literature through journalism; the other, a disciple of Mallarmé, tries to reach the quintessence of the literary. And yet they have made a steady journey, observing, reading, considering and sometimes meeting each other. Although Gide often expressed irritation with Mirbeau, we can see points of tangency and convergence in their works. Moreover, each of them asserted his right to change and contradiction, and they learned to appreciate each other, going so far as to make reciprocal declarations of friendship..." (Alain Goulet, Octave Mirbeau before André Gide, in: Octave Mirbeau. Passions et anathèmes, Caen, Presses universitaires de Caen, 2007). The dedication is written here in purple ink. On the back of the false title, the author has crossed out the first 4 words of the justification, namely:
