Bradel demi-maroquin dark blue with corners, smooth spine, golden head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Paul Vié). Original edition, finished to print on May 20, 1902, printed at 300 copies on vergé d'Arches. It is one of André Gide's most outstanding works, recalling, but in a more complex way, Les Nourritures terrestres and is similar to two texts that the author would later publish: La Porte étroite and La Symphonie pastorale. In it, Gide recounts "the psychological journey of Michel, a young scholar (a sort of philologist), penetrated by civilization and morality, who, following a serious illness from which he barely escaped, learns to depart from his own knowledge and moral principles in order to return to himself, that is to say, to what he calls his 'authentic being'" (Antonini, Le Moment 1900 en philosophie, 2004, p. 320).
