[REVIEWS] The Image. Paris: Floury, December 1896-December 1897. - 12 issues bound in one volume in-4, 300 x 225 : (2 ff.), 383 pp., 48 plates, 1 score, illustrated covers. Havana half morocco with corners, spine ribbed with red, green and ochre morocco mosaic flowers, gilt head, untrimmed, covers preserved (contemporary binding). Complete collection of this important monthly review of modern art founded by the French Corporation of Wood Engravers, published under the literary direction of Roger Marx and Jules Rais, and under the artistic direction of Tony Beltrand, Auguste Lepère and Léon Ruffe. L'Image was intended "to group together, without school bias, in the same search for art, writers, draftsmen, engravers, and to achieve the absolute unity of illustration and text, by offering only the original and the unpublished. " Some of the great names of the time such as George Auriol, Mucha, Maurice Denis, Daniel Vierge, Lucien Pissarro, Pierre Louÿs, Helleu, Remy de Gourmont, Jules Renard, Vallotton, Maurice Barrès, Victor Prouvé, Gustave Kahn, Lucien Descaves, Puvis de Chavannes, Auguste Rodin, Degas, Luc-Olivier Merson, etc. collaborated in this review . The illustration includes numerous compositions and reproductions in black, 48 of which are out of text. There is also an off-text score on two pages. Good complete copy of the cover plates of the general cover and the covers of each of the issues, gathered here at the end of the volume. That of number 1 is illustrated by Mucha and that of number 11 by Toulouse-Lautrec. Rubbed spine, stains on the last two boxes. Very good condition inside.
