French school of the second half of the 18th century Bacchanal of children with a goat Bas-relief in white marble. H: 57 cm, L: 94 cm Related works: - François Duquesnoy, Bacchanal of children with a goat, marble, H: 62.5 cm, L: 87.5 cm, Rome, Galleria Doria Pamphilj. - According to François Duquesnoy, Bacchanale d'enfants avec une chèvre, bronze, H: 21 cm, L: 37 cm, Paris, Petit Palais, inv. SDUT1329. - According to François Duquesnoy, Bacchanale d'enfants avec une chèvre, ivoire, H: 11.5 cm, L: 16 cm, London, Victoria & Albert Museum, inv. 1061. It is probably to François Duquesnoy (1597-1643) that we must turn to find the origin of the composition of this bas-relief. A contemporary of Nicolas Poussin, with whom he shared a taste for children's Bacchanals, in the 1630s François Duquesnoy sculpted a children's Bacchanal with a goat, a model which was taken up and reinterpreted throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. If the composition of the famous Flemish sculptor is more eventful and includes more characters, it is clearly the source of inspiration for the author of our beautiful bas-relief. The softer attitudes of the putti, the very smooth background from which all decoration is absent, the more elongated aspect giving the illusion of an antique frieze, all refer to a later art that heralds the neo-classicism of the 1780s.
