[Auguste RENOIR]. Thadée NATANSON (1868-1951) journalist, collector and art critic, co-founder of the Revue Blanche. Signed autograph manuscript, Sur Renoir, [1923] ; 11 pages petit in-4. "When Octave Mirbeau - it is only one of the forms of his energy that the prophetic gift - serenely declared a third of a century ago that Renoir was one of the greatest painters who would have appeared in the world, he was still raising against his audacity recalcitrant interests and the appointed suppliers of opinions. At the beginning of 1923 Renoir's work was something of the past, as unalterable as the enamel of his colour. It is a fact of history, an event. He himself can add to his work, each day, more voluptuous and abandoned or more incisive, one more masterpiece. ...] Even in his centenary year he will be able to warm with sunlight his illustrious fingers, already a little knotted, perhaps paralyzed, to draw from his palette, which vibrates each day purer and fresher, eyes flashing, closed. [...] He comes from Fragonard, Boucher and the precious Watteau and ties the tradition of colour from Delacroix and Corot to Vuillard and Bonnard. But it takes an effort of reflection to link him to these predecessors of whom he speaks to delight. There are only abstract affinities between them. ...] He escapes their imprint just as his landscapes are unscathed by Cézanne and Monet. While Manet studies in museums and skillfully prepares his paintings, and Degas seeks and suffers, tormented by who knows what worrying absolute, Renoir will have painted all his life only for the pleasure of painting and letting his gifts be. What he saw. What presents itself. His wife, his children, his friends, a guinguette, a theater, a party, a pot of dahlias "... Etc.
