Cecil VAN HAANEN (1844-1914), Austrian painter. 19 L.A.S., 1 - Lot 90
Cecil VAN HAANEN (1844-1914), Austrian painter. 19 L.A.S., 1887-1911, to Henri Monod; 58 pages mostly in-8.
Very beautiful friendly and intimate correspondence in which he evokes his paintings and Venice, his relations with Parisian gallery owners, the onset of illness, his renunciation of painting, and, at the end of his life, his resignation and a pessimistic appreciation of the value and future of his art. Most of the letters are written from Venice, a few from Schramberg, Baden-Baden and Munich. Henri Monod (1843-1911), State Councillor and Administrator, Director of Public Assistance and Hygiene (1887-1911), was an art lover and bibliophile. We can only give here a few quotations from this rich correspondence.

"My paintings are not yet finished; the weather is too bad to work without my greenhouse, where I would have to finish the party, and I no longer like the disputa as a composition. I have to start all over again on another canvas. I am completely disgusted with my work, with Venice and with myself, and I make travel plans, without being able to decide to carry them out! [...] Poor Catinetta just died the other day. She had the makings of a stylish courtesan, and if she would have been prettier she would have made a career"... August 9, 1888: "Venice is very boring now and smells very bad. I am longing for a little fresh air... December 3, 1888: "If you ever have 5 minutes available you will give me great pleasure by telling me if you have seen a painting of me at Simon's house representing a half life-size figure, a Chioggiotta in white. "... May 23, 1900: "I want to finish some things before the arrival of the great heat, which will force me to stay here until July. Afterwards I will unfortunately be forced to take a cure in Carlsbad and at the end of July I will have to stay for a few weeks in the vicinity of Vienna "... August 16, 1904: the heat is atrocious in Venice, "quite unbearable. I had intended to stay here all
