Bohuslav MARTINU (1890-1959). L.A.S. "Bohu", [Nice] 20 Decem - Lot 137
Bohuslav MARTINU (1890-1959). L.A.S. "Bohu", [Nice] 20 December 1954, to Marcel Mihalovici; 2 pages in-4, envelope. He did not dare to invite her earlier to come and visit him because of the bad weather, but encouraged her to come anyway : " It would give you ideas to write a Piano Sonata, imagine that I wrote one, the first one ! What decadence! We have heard your talk or you have been working on your own. We heard Nonet and Cello Sonata ". He evokes his friend the composer Tibor Harsanyi (who died on September 19): "The longer I stay here, even hidden and sheltered, the more I think of poor Tibor who does not know he is French and so he does not dare to say "M-!" to his compatriots; since he does not know. So he gnaws and grumbles [...] But enough of memories. We heard Varreze's masterpiece [Varese Deserts], I hope you didn't miss it, having been taken by the production of your operas, because I seemed to hear your voice of enthusiasm among the admirers. My old man, we no longer have the chance to place ourselves, it's over! They didn't name a street in Prague after me, but a square in Policka...". He rejoices in the success of his friend's operas, "but be careful, you'll soon be like Monique [Haas, pianist, Mihalovici's wife] and you won't see each other any more, as happened to that young married couple whose bride worked during the days and he during the nights [...] and when they met after years by chance on the stairs they didn't recognize each other"...
