[Jules MASSENET (1842-1912)]. Alfredo EDEL (1859-1912) Itali - Lot 139
[Jules MASSENET (1842-1912)]. Alfredo EDEL (1859-1912) Italian painter and costume designer. L.A.S. with watercoloured pen drawing, Milan 7 October 1898, to Jules Massenet; 8 pages in-8.
Nice illustrated letter about the project to build Massenet's Carillon at La Scala in Milan.
It is with great pleasure that he would make the models and scenes of the Carillon, and he communicates, in his "bad French", his observations. The ballet is charming, and does not need to be enlarged: "it would lose its cachet" ... He no longer advises to transpose the action to the time of "Spanish Tyranny" under the Duke of Alba, but the scene and its plan should be changed: instead of a city panorama, "a street plus the church and its turn to the right the inn with a practicable balcony, Bertha's window at the back of the square and a large passage under an arcade"... He illustrates his ideas with a pretty watercolour and a plantation of the decor, and new comments, particularly on the fair: "An orgy in honour of the Duke's arrival! "which would contrast with the "sad note of the poor horologist !... who in crescendo starts to doubt his dream"... And to follow the action: the arrival of the Duke of Burgundy, the carillon, the fall of the clock's veil, "everything finished exactly as it is in the original score, which is a well found nail. With this orrible explanation [...] I come to influence you a little bit so that you are not too much influenced to change or lengthen your pretty ballet. Mr. Saracco, who is an excellent coreographer and ballet master, will arrange some excellent dances for you", Massenet can count on Edel and the director of La Scala, and "all the Milanese public who love you very much will do the rest be sure! "...
