Richard WAGNER. L.A.S., Bayreuth 15 December 1874, to the im - Lot 173
Richard WAGNER. L.A.S., Bayreuth 15 December 1874, to the impresario Carl Voltz; 3 pages in-8; in German. Trouble with his theatrical agents Voltz and Batz, while Wagner struggles with the problems to create the Bayreuth Festival. Voltz's letter convinced him again of the lack of attention Batz pays to the contents of his letters, and Wagner is really tired of always having to respond to counter-affirmations which, given what he says, are meaningless. With respect to his last letter, which Voltz communicated to Batz, he believed that he had explained the reasons that prompted him to modify their formal contractual relations, in a sufficiently frank and clear manner so as not to be continually misunderstood, as if violations and a resulting mistrust were driving him to do so. As Batz persists to believe, this annoyed Wagner to such an extent that he wanted to make it clear, by communicating the rumours from the office of the Playwrights' Association which he had received for at least six weeks, that there was no shortage of unpleasant impressions in this respect. The fact that he did not listen to them was proved by the fact that he did not in any way envisage a dissolution of their relations, but that he had in mind, quite apart from these insinuations, a more fruitful form of their contractual relations. Since he now realizes that his manner of acting and his assertions do not succeed in bringing Batz out of his entrenched position, from which he only opposes him with the suspicions attributed to him, Wagner now considers that it would be best to exclude his personal remarks from their future negotiations, and to leave the rest to his lawyers. It will then be seen whether there are still intentional or unintentional misunderstandings between us, such as, for example, that the notary Skutsch had submitted a revocable power of attorney to the impresario, which was not true at all ...
