Theodore de BANVILLE (1823-1891). L.A.S., Villa Banville, Lucenay-les-Aix (Nièvre) June 17, 1887, to Paul Meurice; 3 pages in-8. We enclose the ex-libris of Théodore de Banville, engraved by Emile Royer; and his obituary notice . He read with delight the Dream of Love, "among the flowers and in the shade of the leaves. What a delightful idyll you have written, and what a tragedy! What tact and art in the preparations, which in short, are everything! A long time ago, centuries ago, when I first read Notre-Dame de Paris, I composed this formula for myself, which more than ever seems to me to be accurate: To make a novelist, take a lyrical and dramatic poet. I would say as well: to do anything. - I believe that poets alone have in their minds the order, without which there is nothing, and which serves as much to create universes as to make a sonnet. ...] Among so many things lived of so much nature, you have not been a naturalist; you have been content to be true and sincere. As an old man, I have felt in my element, as in romantic times.
