André BRETON (1896-1966). L.A.S., Paris 22 November 1946, to - Lot 205
André BRETON (1896-1966). L.A.S., Paris 22 November 1946, to Hans Bellmer; 2 pages in-4. A beautiful letter, six months after Breton's return to France to launch Bellmer in New York, and on the break with the Belgian surrealist movement. "You'd have to be a trout, a trout knight, to go up this torrent of night and silence with the desired ease: six years since Marseilles"... He wants to talk to him about the Surrealist Exhibition that will take place at the Galerie Maeght in May, "which promises to be more sensational and greater in scope than the previous ones. ...] I am delighted that you will be called upon to play a very important part in it". Breton wants to know if he has a contract with a dealer, as he wants to put him in touch with New Yorker Julius Carlebach, who specializes in primitive art, who is going to open a gallery of modern paintings and asked him to "point out to him the artists that I consider the most representative in France. I immediately told him about you". He asked him by cable for reproductions of his recent works, as well as his arrangements: "I thought that an agreement with him could lighten one side of your life considerably"... He asked him to thank Joë Bousquet for providing him with the documents relating to the recent Magritte affair... He assures him that "the membership in the P.C. of the Belgian signatories of the manifesto 'in full sun' (!)" is very real, and that it was they themselves, Magritte, Mariën, and Scutenaire, who informed him of it last June in Paris. Nougé would also say: "I would like to clarify this point as quickly as possible, so that you do not believe in some phantasm on my part, as this seems to have to, alas, explain it very sufficiently (the optimism of the order, the thanks, the insinuations, the anonymous letters and the rest)"...
