Alfred JARRY (1873-1907). Autograph manuscript, Pantagruel P - Lot 270
Alfred JARRY (1873-1907). Autograph manuscript, Pantagruel Prologue - Act I; 33 pages on 30 folios in-fol. (scraps at the first and last leaves of Act I), under green cardboard folder bearing the stamp of J.H. Sainmont and the crocodile head stamp. Working manuscript of a very first version of Pantagruel, with an unpublished Prologue. The project of Pantagruel, an opera-bouffe libretto after Rabelais for his friend the composer Claude Terrasse (1867-1923), occupied Jarry for nearly ten years, from 1897 to 1905, and was published in several successive versions; it was Eugène Demolder who finalized the libretto in 5 acts and 6 tableaux on which Terrasse worked (the work was premiered at the Grand Théâtre de Lyon on January 31, 1911) and which was published in 1911 under the two names of Jarry and Demolder. The present manuscript corresponds to the second writing of the first version (after a first writing in old French), elaborated in 1899-1901, and intended for the Théâtre des Pantins. It is carefully drawn up in black ink, with the names of the characters and the didascalia underlined in red ink. However, it was later used as a working manuscript, and presents numerous corrections, additions and annotations, by Jarry himself, but also by Claude Terrasse and by Willy, whose collaboration was called upon (Terrasse announced in Le Courrier français of May 5, 1901 that he had finished Pantagruel, "libretto by Jarry and Gauthier-Villars "). Prologue. Sewn in-fol. notebook, comprising 1 title page and 6 numbered pages 1 to 6 written in red pencil in ink on the front; on the left page opposite pages 2, 3 and 4, Jarry noted drafts of pencil verses , very corrected. This Prologue, still unpublished, includes two scenes; it evokes the death of Badebec, Gargantua
