André MALRAUX (1901-1976). Autograph manuscript; 1 page and - Lot 298
André MALRAUX (1901-1976). Autograph manuscript; 1 page and a half in-4 on 2 folios numbered 18-19 made up of six glued pieces (small angular lack at the bottom of the 2nd folio), with blue pencil scratches. Interesting text on art. "What era has seen art undergo such upheavals as we have since Akhnaton? Even the end of the 6th century in Greece, the Renaissance in Italy, did not experience the mortal struggle that marked the end of the 19th century. Leonardo's opponents were neither Gothic nor valets. We have seen such great minds, contemporaries of Cézanne and Van Gogh, surprised that they could be ignored. The time when our own masters were derided is in all our memories. And yet the action of the work of art seems to elude us: we speak of Cézanne as if his work, created once and for all, had waited in timelessness for a strange rehabilitation [...] It is unlikely that many true Meissonier lovers have been converted to the genius of Cézanne. And if one misunderstands how modern art creates its Church, it is because the word bourgeois introduces into a complex and long struggle, an illusory constant. ...] The bourgeois (the artists understood this very well) was opposed to art by a conception of the world in which it was intruding or superfluous, not by a class fatality. ...] Possession of Cabanel's paintings gave him prestige, and of Cézanne's paintings, he thought, of the ridiculous: that the ridiculous changed its name was enough to make him change his paintings. Painting was made to bring him nymphs, no doubt, but not to the point of preferring them to consideration".
