Joseph-François MICHAUD (1767-1839) historian. L.A.S., [Mans - Lot 306
Joseph-François MICHAUD (1767-1839) historian. L.A.S., [Mansourah] "Week of April 8" [1831], to Jean-François Mimaut, Consul General of France in Cairo; 2 pages and a half in folio, address. One joins an L.A.S. to Mrs. Berryer: "we are all workers of royalism, and thank God, one does not recognize any privilege"..., and a portrait. An interesting letter from the historian of the Crusades towards the end of his journey to the East in May 1830, when he reached the end of his journey to Mansourah and Damietta: "I shall sadly take the road to Alexandria again, crossing the delta; [...] we saw a mile from Cairo an overturned kanche [kange], showing the keel in place of the mast; when I asked how this happened, I was told that God had willed it so. God did not allow this to happen to us, and I consider myself very happy. In Mansourah, Dr Canova took him to the banks of the Achmoun Canal: "We recognized the place where the Crusaders camped, the place where the Muslims camped; I saw the raised ground where St Louis appeared armed with his sword of Germany, the small bridge that the Sire of Joinville defended; when we returned from our walk, I was shown the house of the eunuch Lokman where the King of France was imprisoned. I found something no less precious to me, an Arabic chronicle of Mansourah; [...] nothing is missing to my joy than to be able to read this chronicle which is not known to our scholars. He then left for Damietta: "I visited the site of ancient Damietta, where today the village of Lisbet del borg [Ezbet el Borg], the village of the Sour, is located. ... I had some pleasure in visiting these plains, the scene of so many battles that I have described ... When I think of the crowd of renegades produced by the Crusades, I think I see the descendant of a Frenchman in every Arab I meet in this country ...".
