Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) - Lot 340
Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) Buste de Bellone. 1883. Dry point. 100 x 150. Delteil 3; Thorson III. Fine proof on vellum, exceptionally dedicated "to my little cousin Coltat" and signed in pen and ink. Oxidation of the sheet, notably at the opening of an old mount and along the edges. Sowing of small spots (of ink ?) in the right margin. Short handling folds, mainly in the right margin and at the foot. All margins. The print takes up the bust made by the sculptor for a competition organized in 1879 for a monument to the Republic, intended to decorate the new Town Hall of the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Rose Beuret, the artist's wife, served as a model for this bust of the goddess of war, as can be seen in a print kept at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., annotated by the artist "Portrait of Mrs. Rodin". The dedicatee of our print is Henriette Coltat, daughter of the first cousin of his wife Rose Beuret, who took care of Rodin after Rose's death. The bronze The Eternal Spring in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston also bears a dedication to Henriette ("To my dear cousin Henriette Coltat, affectionate memory, A. Rodin"), testifying to the ties uniting the aging artist and the young woman. There are several photographs by Pierre Choumoff showing the two of them, at the Villa des Brillants or in front of the Porte de l'Enfer in Meudon.
