Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) - Lot 489
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) For Hélène and Iliazd. (Wedding announcement of Hélène Douard and Iliazd). August 1, 1968. Dry point. 160 x 98. Bloch 1463; Baer 1728 B b 2. Very rare proof on flying china (single sheet and not double sheet), probably a trial proof of the wedding announcement, bearing on the front the engraving under which is the typographical mention (probably by Barnier): "Picasso 1.8.68. IV" and on the back the typographed text: "Vallauris Alpes Maritimes Le 31 octobre 1968 / Hélène Douard et Iliazd / sont heureux de vous faire part de leur mariage / Electra Golfe Juan Trigance Var" (on the invitations sent, this text was opposite the engraving on a double page). Minute folds at the edges of the page. Minute tear at the left edge. Seal : envelope bearing a large label " Fragile " in beige on a blue background, possibly original. Very rare. Ilia Zdanevitch, known as Iliazd (1894-1975), is a Russian poet, art historian and publisher of Georgian origin. He published 25 artist's books, illustrated by the major artists of modern art. It was in Vallauris that he met the ceramist Hélène Douard-Mairé, who became his third wife. On October 31, 1968, their marriage was celebrated in Vallauris. Their witnesses were the writer Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes and Pablo Picasso (represented by his wife Jacqueline) Not many of these announcements have survived: out of the 70 printed, about fifty were sent. A dozen remained at Iliazd's.
