BALZAC (Honoré de). La Maison du chat-qui-pelote.... - Lot 448 - Ader
BALZAC (Honoré de). La Maison du chat-qui-pelote. Preface by Francisque Sarcey. Paris: Librairie L. Conquet, L. Carteret et Cie, 1899. - In-8, 231 x 155 : (2 ff.), IX, 134 pp. and (1 f.), illustrated cover. Bradel half blue-grey morocco with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt and cold motifs, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (E. Carayon). Beautiful edition illustrated with 41 compositions by Louis Dunki, wood-engraved by Maurice Baud, including 2 on the cover and 39 in the text. "La Maison du chat-qui-pelote is only a short story; but, of all those signed by Balzac, if it is not the best, which would be debatable and depends on taste, at least there is no doubt that it is the most interesting, the most curious ; for it is the first of his works in which he has manifestly taken possession of his style, in which he seems to have been aware of his genius, in which he has applied the processes by means of which he has composed this colossal Comédie humaine, which has made him the first novelist of his time and of all times" (Preface). The edition was printed at 200 numbered copies on Marais wove paper (n° 174). A very fine copy in the binding of Emile Carayon, enriched with the publication prospectus. Spine faded.
