BARBIER (George). Le Bonheur du jour ou Les... - Lot 451 - Ader
BARBIER (George). Le Bonheur du jour ou Les Grâces à la mode. Paris : Meynial, [1924]. - Oblong folio album, 445 x 313 : (19 ff.), illustrated cover. In sheets, in an illustrated velvet slipcase, circular window on the first cover, revealing the cover design (Jean-Claude Chalanson). Superb and rare album comprising 21 colour compositions engraved by H. Reidel after George BARBIER's compositions, including one on the cover, one on the title, 3 in the text and 16 out of the text. "In the following pages, we would like to evoke the splendour of the 1920 peace year: the extravagant fittings, similar to the dress of Peau d'Âne, the feathered fans and the hair sacrificed on the altar of some mysterious Venus; everything that shimmers, everything that burns, everything that irritates and pleases at the same time. One would like to represent here the interiors in the taste of the day, the illuminated walls, the tenebrous mirrors, the irresistible divans, the veiled lights of the rooms invented for laziness and pleasure by an upholsterer-poet, charming and uninhabitable. You will find here lacquer furniture, Pekingese dogs, jade rings and streams of pearls, nothing will be neglected to please you, for we humbly solicit the suffrages of the frivolous and the indulgence of the wise, anxious to please the one and entertain the other" (preface). Edition of 300 copies, all on vellum paper. A perfectly preserved copy, enriched with the original pencil and ink sketch by Barbier, with watercolour highlights, for one of the plates of the album, representing "Mademoiselle Sorel en grand habit", which was exhibited at the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice in 2008. Very nice slipcase with a label inside in the name of Jean-Claude Chalanson .
