BOFA (Gus) - MAC ORLAN (Pierre). Le Livre... - Lot 457 - Ader
BOFA (Gus) - MAC ORLAN (Pierre). Le Livre de la Guerre de Cent Ans. Paris : La Renaissance du Livre, [1921]. - In-4, 276 x 225 : (4 ff. last blank), 40 ff. pp. 41-49, (1 blank), p. 50, (2 ff.), illustrated cover. Grey cloth with bradel, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Ateliers Laurenchet). First edition illustrated with nearly 50 coloured stencil compositions by Gus BOFA (1883-1968), of which 30 are full page and 5 on double page. This album, accompanied by a text by Pierre Mac Orlan, was conceived by the artist in 1918 but its production was delayed because of the shortage of paper and printing ink. It was not published until 1921, after the first drawings had appeared in the satirical magazine La Baïonnette. By transposing the misfortunes of the Great War to the 14th century, Gus Bofa wrote a pamphlet that called into question the selfishness of some and the passivity of others, showing in particular rich people getting richer, peasants taking advantage of the misfortune of soldiers, etc. The edition was printed in 401 copies. This one is one of the 340 on antique laid paper (n° 327). A copy that Jacques Crépineau had bound by the Laurenchet workshops and enriched with a very beautiful drawing by Gus Bofa in ink enhanced with watercolour, on a full page in-4, titled "La Patrouille" and dedicated by the artist to his close friend Louis Malexis, brother of Charles Malexis, director of the Édition française illustrée and of La Baïonnette. There is also a L.A.S. from Gus Bofa, one page in-4, in which the artist praises Jean Oberlé. Some traces of tape on the endpapers and trace of an old bookplate. Attached : - SWIFT (Jonathan). Advice to servants. Translated from the English by L. de Wailly. Preface by Pierre Mac Orlan. Paris : Éditions de la Banderole, [1921]. - In-12, 183 x 124 : XIII pp, (1 f.), 111 pp, (1 f), printed cover. Brown jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, red chagrin lining framed by a green morocco band with two gilt fillets, brocaded silk endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine retained (Max Fonsèque). Edition printed at 621 copies, illustrated with 20 compositions by Gus BOFA, including 17 mid-page chapter headings. One of 550 copies on vellum pur fil Lafuma (n° 485), in a lined binding by Fonsèque. Spine slightly faded.
