BOFA (Gus) - QUINCEY (Thomas de). The Assassination... - Lot 458 - Ader
BOFA (Gus) - QUINCEY (Thomas de). The Assassination considered as one of the fine arts. Paris : EOS, 1930. - In-4, 275 x 187 : (4 ff., first blank), 274 pp, (3 ff. last blank), 24 plates, printed cover. Black chagrin, straight and curved gilt filleting as well as red filleting and dotting on the boards and continuous on the spines, smooth spine, black chagrin framed inside, decorated with gilt filleting, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine retained (Pierrette Allard). First edition of the translation by Maurice Beerblock, and first illustrated edition of this essay, both macabre and humorous, by the English writer Thomas de Quincey for whom the perfect crime paradoxically possessed a kind of artistic beauty. Only 135 copies of the edition were printed, and it was brilliantly illustrated with 24 out-of-text etchings by Gus BOFA (1883-1968). At the time of this publication, Gus Bofa, who had reached the full mastery of his art, wanted to take a step forward and felt the need to measure himself with works destined for posterity and close to his temperament, where satire and black humour are given free rein. L'assassinat, considered as one of the fine arts, remains in this sense one of his most remarkable successes. One of 110 copies on Rives vellum, containing a second state suite with remarks on Rives. Beautiful binding by Pierrette Allard. Another signature appears on the second back cover, difficult to decipher. Slight rubbing at the bottom of the spine and two small snags on the first board and the spine. Freckles, also affecting the suite.
